The key to being a successful manager or supervisor is having successful time management skills. By utilizing some simple time management strategies, you can operate more effectively and avoid any potentially career threatening catastrophes.

Your time is your most valued resource so it makes sense to use it wisely. If you spend too much of your working day procrastinating, you are unlikely to very effective at your job. Successful time management is a skill that can be learned and one that will pay you dividends in the long term.

  • By analyzing carefully what you do in the average day you will soon be able to spot where you waste time unnecessarily. If you spend too much time doing tasks that could be more usefully delegated to junior staff, then delegate! Typing up a report is not likely to be a good use of your time as your secretary is probably a much faster and more accurate typist than you—so give it to her.
  • Say no to excessive workloads. If you are being snowed under by a ridiculous amount of work, there is no way you will be able to do every task efficiently, so say so.
  • Prioritize tasks—some jobs will obviously be more urgent than others so it makes sense to schedule them in for priority treatment.Plan each day efficiently and make good use of a diary. By utilizing diary software like Outlook, you will be able to schedule every appointment and meeting, complete with reminders where necessary.
  • If you find yourself repeatedly picking up the slack of others, then address the issue before it gets out of hand. If a junior member of staff is inadequately trained and you are being forced to help them every five minutes, then organize some extra training.
  • Beware of being delegated too many tasks from your own manager. If they are ineffective and failing to do their job properly, it will impact on you. If this is the case, confront the issue before it gets out of hand.
  • Be very organized. An untidy desk is unlikely to help you with successful time management.
  • Always schedule personal time into your day where necessary. If a call to your wife is important, then make time to do it!

Remember: by being effective with your time management strategies, you will be a much more effective manager.
